Lady Eagles host Wingate, Eagles travel to L-R, as C-N teams begin SAC Tournament Play
March 1, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Carson-Newman Lady Eagles are the No. 4 seed and will host No. 5 Wingate University, while the Carson-Newman Eagles are the No. 8 seed and will travel to Hickory, N.C. to face the top-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne Bears, in the first round of the 2009 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament on Wednesday night.
Women's action will tipoff at 7 p.m. in Holt Fieldhouse, while the men's game is schedule to tip at 8 p.m. at Shuford Gymnasium in Hickory, N.C.
The Lady Eagles and Wingate finished tied for fourth place at 9-7 in the conference. Carson-Newman earned the fourth seed because it split two regular-season meetings against top-seed Tusculum.
The game is a rematch of Saturday night's regular season finale, which Wingate won, 99-90. C-N won its January meeting with the Bulldogs in Wingate, N.C., 95-93.
The Carson-Newman/Wingate winner will face the winner of top-seeded Tusculum and No. 8 Lincoln Memorial on Saturday afternoon at Catawba Valley Community College in Hickory, N.C. at 1 p.m.
The Eagles will face Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday night hoping to use the momentum from an 80-74 win over Wingate on Saturday to try and upset the Bears.
L-R swept the season series with C-N, dropping the Eagles 67-53 on Feb. 13 in Jefferson City.
The Eagles pushed L-R to the limit in the Jan. 24 meeting in Hickory, N.C. as a Jesse McMurray jumper rattled out in the final seconds to preserve a 98-95 win.
Tickets for quarterfinal games are $6 for adults, $3 for children, students and college students with ID. Tickets for semifinal and championship rounds are $10 for adults.
The men's and women's winners of the tournament will earn automatic bids to the NCAA Tournament Division II.
