C-N's Tipton surpasses 1,000 career points
Feb. 17, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- Senior forward Ashley Tipton (Knoxville, Tenn.) came to the Carson-Newman women's basketball program as a walk-on in 2005 and has blossomed into an All-South Atlantic Conference caliber performer over the last four years.
During Saturday's 94-91 loss at Tusculum, Tipton continued to leave her mark on the Lady Eagles program as she surpassed a pair of career milestones.
Tipton's 16-point effort against the Pioneers pushed her over the 1,000-point plateau, with her final basket giving her 1,001 career points. Tipton also sank three 3-pointers to give her 202 threes for her career.
"It's a great honor that Ashley was able to reach 1,000 points after being a walk-on," C-N coach Dean Walsh said. "She is now 13th on the all-time scoring list. It shows longevity and that you are playing a lot. It goes to say she has been a very successful player for us."
Carson-Newman (16-7, 7-5 SAC) may have another Lady Eagle reach the 1,000-point club tomorrow, as junior forward Shari Buford (Hampton, Ga.) is just seven points shy with 993 career points.
"For Shari to reach 1,000 in just three years will be a great accomplishment," Walsh said. "She is 14th on our all-time scoring list right now."
The Lady Eagles will be looking to get back on the winning track on Wednesday at Brevard College (6-17). C-N has lost two straight games to the top two teams in the SAC (Lenoir-Rhyne 76-73, Tusculum 94-91) by a combined six points.
"We've lost two tough games in a row to two very good opponents," Walsh said. "We are going to have to go to Brevard and take care of business and get a couple of players on track. It's a matter of playing well on the road and putting these last two losses behind us."
C-N will be facing a Brevard squad that has yet to win a conference game (0-12) and has lost 11 out of its last 13 games. Walsh said the Lady Eagles will have to play good perimeter defense against the Tornados, which are second in the SAC in 3-pointers made (160).
"We are going to have to find a way slow down their 3-point shooters," said Walsh, whose team defeated Brevard 99-77 on Jan. 21 in Mossy Creek. "And we need slow down (Brevard forward Samantha) Winn. She is second in the conference in scoring right now (16.1 ppg.)"
Tipoff for Wednesday's contest is set for 6 p.m. in Brevard, N.C.
Radio: The game will be broadcast on WMTN-AM 1300 (Morristown, Tenn.), as well as webcast at www.wmtnradio.com.
