Eagles Near The End Of Spring Workouts, Hold Orange and Blue Game
March 5, 2009
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. -- The Carson-Newman football team held its annual Orange and Blue intra-squad scrimmage Thursday afternoon at Burke-Tarr Stadium.
Quarterback Alex Good (Greensboro, N.C.) completed 7-of-12 passes for 76 yards and added 61 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to lead the Blue team (offense) past the Orange team (defense) 67-30.
Eagles head coach Ken Sparks was pleased with the effort from his team during the last three weeks, especially considering the large number of players that have missed the entire spring with injuries.
"You could tell that we have about 10 or 11 projected starters standing on the sideline and watching," Sparks said. "All of those young people had a chance to show what they could do, and I thought some of them did a good job taking advantage of it and came a long way.
Blue team running back Buck Wakefield (Drummonds, Tenn.), a first team All-South Atlantic Conference selection in 2008, racked up 176 yards and one touchdown on just 13 carries.
The Blue team struggled for most of the first half as it turned the ball over three times on fumbles, but Good scored the first touchdown of the scrimmage with 41 seconds left in the half as he scampered down the sidelines for a 72-yard touchdown run. David Henrickson (Jefferson City, Tenn.) added the extra point to give the Blue team a 26-21 advantage at halftime.
The Blue team added three more touchdowns in the second half. Wakefield found the end zone on a 61-yard run, Good broke across the goal line from three yards out and Alex Rouse (Maryville, Tenn.) connected with Reggie Hubbard (Chattanooga, Tenn.) for a 32-yard touchdown pass to end the scoring.
Hubbard, who earned first team All-SAC honors last season, finished the day with four receptions for 78 yards.
Rouse also lined up at receiver during the scrimmage as he hauled in one pass for 12 yards.
"He needs to be on the field," Sparks said of Rouse. "Since there is only one quarterback, (Rouse and Good) both can't play quarterback at the same time. Both of them are good athletes that can help us."
