Carson-Newman Falls to Maryville College, 69-56
MARYVILLE, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman men’s
basketball team was unable to overcome a poor shooting performance
and 25 turnovers, as the Eagles dropped a 69-56 decision to
Maryville College on Wednesday night at Boydson Baird
Gymnasium.
With the loss, C-N falls to 4-3 on the season, while Maryville
improves to 6-1.
The Eagles struggled to get into an offensive rhythm as they shot
just 32.2 percent (19-of-59) from the floor, including a 4-for-20
effort from behind the arc. Maryville didn’t fare much
better, shooting at a 32.8 percent (22-of-67) clip and making only
seven of their 24 attempts from 3-point range.
Maryville held a 55-43 advantage in rebounds, including 17 on the
offensive end.
Senior guard Jordan Dixon (Clinton, Tenn.) poured in 20 points,
including 16 in the second half, to lead the Eagles, while J.J.
Wesley (Mobile, Ala.) added 10 points. Tray Okoth (Richmond, Va.)
pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and collected three steals in
the loss.
Eryk Watson and Greg Hernandez combined for 46 points to carry the
Scots. Watson led the way with 26 points, seven rebounds and three
steals, while Hernandez tossed in 20 points, grabbed nine rebounds
and recorded two blocks.
C-N committed 20 turnovers in the first half alone, allowing the
Scots to build a 41-20 lead at the break.
The Eagles made a run in the second half as they held Maryville to
29.6 percent shooting but they were unable able to cut the
Scots’ lead below 11 points.
C-N returns to action on Saturday as it opens South Atlantic
Conference play at Lincoln Memorial. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m.
