Orange takes down Blue in C-N volleyball scrimmage

In another five-set match, the Orange came out victorious, winning 20-18 in an extended fifth set.  

Freshman outside hitter Sara Fairley (Charlotte, N.C.) helped the Orange squad turn outcome in its favor – providing the decisive kill in the final set.

"I didn't start off to good the first couple of (sets), but it was a great feeling to finish off like I did," Fairley said.

Rachael Bowlin, a senior outside hitter from Morristown, Tenn., battled for the Blue team.  Bowlin saw first-hand from the opposite side of the net just what Fairley has to offer.

"Sarah really stepped up as a freshman and did well," Bowlin said. "It was good to get her and the rest of the freshman a chance to stand up and perform."

Bowlin was one of two upper classmen on the Blue team, but continued to show confidence in the underclassmen as they proved their abilities in the latter sets..

C-N head volleyball coach Shannon Mincey was proud of the overall effort from both teams as well as a few players. Mincey said she sees great potential in her Fairly. I am so impressed with Sara", Mincey said. "She has key skills that ultimately shifted the Orange team's momentum and got us the win."

After today's scrimmage, both Orange and Blue together can see what their teams are capable of doing as well as what they need to work on for this upcoming season 

 "What we need to improve on is defense, transitional digs, and being able to send a kill after a dig," Mincey said.

Carson-Newman opens the season Friday, September 7 versus Francis Marion.
