Carson-Newman Women's Soccer Position Previews: The Midfielders 8-18-21
This is part two of a three-part series previewing the 2021 Carson-Newman women's soccer program.
JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – This is part two of a three-part series previewing the 2021 Carson-Newman women's soccer program. This feature focuses on the midfielders, a position where the Eagles bring back five returners while adding one new addition.
The midfield position returns a group of two juniors, two sophomores, and a super senior in Misha Wolters (Alphen aan den Rijn, Holland), Addie Henry (Chattanooga, Tenn.), Madison Huffstetler (Maryville, Tenn.), Katie Koumiss (Gallatin, Tenn.), and Savannah Fields (Johnson City, Tenn.).
Henry was a consistent presence for the Eagles midfield through the spring 2021 season and was named a first-team All-SAC member. The Chattanooga native collected a brace against Tusculum to secure her two goals of the spring including finding the back of the net from 40 yards out. She was second on the team behind senior Emilee Futrell (Wilson, N.C.) with 18 shot attempts while seven of her attempts find the frame to place her third on the squad. Henry finished in a tie for third on the team with her two goals alongside Fields.
Fields ended the spring 2021 campaign as a second-team All-SAC selection. The Johnson City native started off her Eagles career by netting her first career goal as part of the 6-0 domination of Mars Hill. The freshman then continued her success with another goal in the following game to push C-N ahead against Tusculum. Her two goals tie her in third on the team with Henry, while Fields shot the third-most attempts for C-N with her 10 attempts with six falling on frame.
Huffstetler made another impressive mark in her C-N campaign as she made two appearances for the Eagles, including one start in the spring 2021 campaign. Wolters was part of the starting XI for the Eagles in the spring 2021 and compiled two shot attempts. Koumiss was part of the Eagles bench in the spring but never saw action on the field.
"We had a few good freshmen come in like Savannah. Having a returning group coming back is nice," Henry mentioned. "It's really nice to have this chemistry coming back and playing together after the spring."
Joining the midfielder group is a McMinn County product in freshman Sydnee Duncan (Athens, Tenn.). Duncan led her team in assists for games recorded. In her final season as a Cherokee, Duncan was named district midfield MVP, first-team All-region, an All-State midfielder, team midfield MVP, and a team captain. Her junior season saw her holding titles of first-team All-District, team midfield MVP, and team captain. Duncan's first two years at McMinn County were full of awards such as second-team all-district alongside team freshman of the year. As a member of the Cherokees, Duncan saw three straight district championships, two straight region championships, and made it to state in 2020.
"I hope I can build upon my success last season and get better," Henry said. "It's important to me to maintain this chemistry and it will help and be nice to build upon it with the girls returning. With everyone coming back, it's really nice as we head into our first full season in almost two years. We have a lot ahead of us but I think this group will be ready."
The final part of this series will highlight the defenders and goalkeepers for the 2021 Carson-Newman women's soccer program.
