VIERA, Fla. – No. 22/23 Carson-Newman faced 30 holes of bogey or higher through day one at the Panther Invitational, landing it at fifth-place with a 12-over 300 on Sunday.
On the flipside of those bogeys, C-N carded 13 holes of birdie or better, two of those being eagles. It was one of just two teams to score an eagle in the opening round, the other being Keiser, the No. 2 team in the NAIA.
Carson-Newman sits as the third-best par-3 scoring side with a 3.20 average on such holes. It heads into Monday's second round 14 shots behind the lead.
"We wasted a lot of opportunities today," Carson-Newman coach Randy Wylie said. "I thought we had a lot to great shots but had too many three-putts, short game mistakes and too many penalties. Jake Mynatt had a solid round though."
Jake Mynatt (Knoxville, Tenn.) led the Eagles after the first round with an even 72 to sit in a tie for seventh. He sits just three shots out of first after canceling out his five bogeys with a trio of birdies and an eagle on the par-5 15th.
Two shots behind the junior heading into Monday is Fintan McKenna (Aberdeen, Scotland), tied for 16th. His round of 74 came on four birdies with three of his six bogeys happening on par-4 holes.
Fergus Robinson (Towcester, England) tied for 26th through the opening round, going three-over with a 74. The junior stayed one-under through the front nine with a birdie on the par-4 5th. He opened the back nine with three-straight bogeys before adding on two more and a birdie in the stretch.
Will Collins (Knoxville, Tenn.) sits tied for 49th through the first 18 at seven-over. His round of 79 was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 2nd but he tacked on eight holes of bogey or higher.
Both Collins and Mynatt are in a tie for the second-lowest average on par-3 scoring with a one-under 2.75.
Zach Young (Crossville, Tenn.) rounded out the Eagles on the leaderboard through the first day tied for 56th. The sophomore carded a birdie in the round but he added six holes above par, including a four-over outing on the par-4 18th to go nine-over.
No. 2/1 Barry went into the clubhouse on Sunday as the only team in the red, sitting at the top of the leaderboard with a two-under 286 showing. Keiser and Eastern Florida State tied at second with a 291 total.
Mount Olive's Patrick Schweitz and Barry's A.J. Ewart lead the field at three-under through the first round. One shot behind the pair sits a three-way tie for third.
The tournament continues Monday with second round action. The day will start at 7:30 a.m. with C-N hitting the links at 9:29 a.m., starting with Jake Mynatt. Fans can follow along with live scoring through Golfstat before a recap hits cneagles.com.
