Lady Eagles Top Anderson, 4-2, in SAC Opener

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. — The Carson-Newman women's soccer team tallied three second-half goals en route to a 4-2 victory over Anderson on Saturday afternoon at McCown Field in its South Atlantic Conference opener.

With the win, the Lady Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. Anderson falls to 3-5-1 and 0-3 in SAC play.

C-N dominated possession as it outshot the Trojans 26-6, with an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal.

The Lady Eagles grabbed a 1-nil lead in the 16th minute, as Andrea Saevik (Froystadvaag, Norway) finished off a pass from Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) in the box.

But Anderson responded in the 44th minute when Jessica Kleinberg (Hamilton, Ohio) found Katelyn Conover (Simpsonville, S.C.) four a goal to knot the match at 1-1.

C-N took the lead for good coming out of the locker room. Freshman Bianca Hall (Newcastle, England) fired a shot past Anderson goalkeeper Maddison McLendon (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) to give the Lady Eagles a 2-1 advantage. Morgan Gruenenfelder (Sweetwater, Tenn.) was credited with the assist.

After C-N took advantage of an own goal by the Trojans in the 48th minute to build a 3-1 lead, Anderson pulled to within 3-2 on a goal by Conover in the 51st minute.

However, C-N put the game out of reach in the 81st minute, as Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) placed the ball in the back of the net to give the Lady Eagles a 4-2 cushion. Haley Julian (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Gruenenfelder were credited with the assists.

Lady Eagle goalkeeper Kyline Humm (Crystal Lake, Ill.) collected two saves in picking up the win, while McLendon grabbed seven saves for Anderson.

C-N returns to the pitch on Tuesday at home against UNC Pembroke. Match time is set for 4 p.m. at McCown Field.
