Carson-Newman Womens Soccer Places Four On The Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The Carson-Newman
College Women’s Soccer Team saw four of its players named to
the 2009 Daktronics NCAA Division II All-Southeast Region Teams,
region officials announced Tuesday. The Daktronics All-Region teams
are voted on by the sports information directors of their
respective regions.
Sophomore forward Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge,
Tenn.) and junior defender Melissa Morris
(Sweetwater, Tenn.) were named to the first team while sophomore
midfielder Sandra Kaelin (Trachslau, SWITZERLAND)
and freshman midfielder Andrea Saevik (Bolandet,
NORWAY) received second-team honors.
“We are delighted at the all-region
selections,” said Head Coach Phil
McNamara. “It might be as many as we have had in
my time here at Carson-Newman. The compliment of this goes not only
to the players selected, but to the whole team. Although all four
of these players are deserving of this honor, I feel that several
other could have made it as well.”
Howell leads the team in all offensive categories: goals (13),
assists (seven), total points (33) and match-winning goals (seven).
She was also named to the All-South Atlantic Conference First Team
this season. She was also named SAC Player of the week on Oct.
5.
Morris has been the top-scoring defender on a back line that has
only allowed 16 goals in 22 matches this season. She has recorded
three goals and four assists for 10 total points including two
match-winning scores. Morris was also named to the All-SAC First
Team.
Howell and Morris are now eligible for All-America
consideration.
Kaelin finished second on the team with 11 goals scored and added
five assists for 27 points. She also tallied three match-winners.
She is also a Second-Team All-SAC honoree and was chosen as the MVP
of the 2009 Food Lion SAC Tournament.
Saevik received First-Team All-SAC accolades for her performance
during the regular season as she scored three goals and tied for
the team high with seven assists. She currently has 13 total points
and has notched one match-winning goal.
“All of these players are having great seasons and we hope
that continues this weekend,” concluded McNamara.
The Lady Eagles are currently 19-2-1 on the season after winning
the 2009 South Atlantic Conference Regular Season Title and are
still competing in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. C-N hosts the
Sweet 16 and Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at McCown
Field. Carson-Newman will play Columbus State for the Southeast
Region title and the winner will face the winner of the South
Region championship match (Rollins vs. West Florida).
