Lady Eagles fall to Lady Vols 104-44

Carson-Newman saw junior guard Chante' Markus (Hummelstown, Pa.) and sophomore guard Lashawnda Peacher (Springfield, Tenn.) score in double figures, with Markus leading the way with her 12 points in the second exhibition game of the year for the Lady Eagles.

"I thought our effort was good and I thought we competed," said Carson-Newman head coach Mike Mincey. "We didn't back down and necessarily play intimidated. What I know we have to work on come Friday is our offense. We still have to have more of a transition and then try to get looks."

Tennessee jumped out to an early 10-0 lead and would lead the Lady Eagles 47-15 at halftime. The Lady Vols had five scorers in double figures, led by Meighan Simmons' 24 points. The Lady Vols also saw Bashaara Graves pick up a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

The Lady Eagles found success from beyond the arc in the second half, going five of 10 from three-point land. Leading Carson-Newman in three-pointers was Markus, who was three of four from three and scored 12 points to lead the Lady Eagles in scoring.

Carson-Newman ended the game shooting 20 percent from the field (11-55) and 32 percent from three-point land along with a 62 percent mark from the free throw line. Tennessee shot 55 percent from the field and was held to 40 percent from three and the Lady Vols were 26-39 at the free throw line.

Junior forward Shyra Brown (Cleveland, Tenn.), who led Carson-Newman in points against North Carolina Sunday, scored seven points and collected six rebounds while battling Tennessee's post players.

With the loss, the Lady Eagles have now dropped their last 10 games of the series against Tennessee, and this is the eighth time in the last nine meetings that the Lady Vols have scored over 100 points against C-N.

The Lady Eagles will round out exhibition play against East Tennessee State in Johnson City on Saturday Nov. 3 at 1:30 p.m.

The regular season will begin with a trip to Harrogate for the SAC-Conference of the Carolinas Challenge, where the Lady Eagles will face Coker and Erskine from Nov. 9-10.
