Lady Eagles fall in SAC play at Brevard, 81-68

BREVARD, N.C. - The Brevard College women's basketball team was able to pick up their first South Atlantic Conference victory on Wednesday night when they defeated the Carson-Newman Eagles 81-68 at Boshamer Gymnasium. Five Tornados were in double-figures in the win. With the victory the Tornados improve to 5-8 overall and 1-2 in conference play. 

Brevard took their first lead after Brianna Worley (Asheville, N.C.) hit a layup with 18:20 on the clock on the first half. The Tornados were up 6-4 and they never trailed throughout the remainder of the game as they 53.7% from the field and 45.5% from three-point land.

Despite falling behind by two in the opening minute, they were able to regain control of the game quickly. They were never trailing the Eagles following Worley's first two points of the game at 18:37. After taking their first lead at the 18:20 mark in the first half, the Tornados continued to build on their lead going up by as many as five in the first 15 minutes of play. Carson-Newman was able to tie things up at the 6:20 mark when they scored four straight points, making it 22-22. The Tornados followed up by going on a 14-3 run and were up by 11 with 2:14 left in the first half. Brevard took the game into half up by eight. 

Anna Schlobohm (Greensboro, N.C.) led Brevard in the first half with 12 points. She was 5-of-6 from the field in the first half and 2-for-2 from three-point range. Worley had eight points at the break and was 4-of-7 from the field, while Holli Flippo (Kingston Springs, Tenn.) had seven in the first 20 minutes. Mandy Mendenhall led all-scorers in the first half by dropping 13 for Carson-Newman.

The Tornados came out scorching in the second half scoring the first 10 points. Lindsay Brendle (High Point, N.C.) sparked things for Brevard by hitting a three-ball in the first 13 seconds of the half. Brevard took an 18 point lead when Amanda Whitaker (Asheville, N.C.) hit a layup with 18:33 remaining in the game. The Tornados were able to keep a double-digit lead throughout the remainder of the game, and led by as many as 19 in the game. BC was hot from down town in the second half as they shot 50% from behind the arc. They shot 50% from the field as well, going 13-of-26 in the final 20 minutes of play.

Scholobohm led Brevard with 18 points in the win. She was 7-of-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from three-point land. She also dished out three assists and pulled down three rebounds in the win. Four other Tornados were in double-digits as Brendle followed up with 17 points of her own. She was 6-for-11 from the field and 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Micheala Watkins (Forest City, N.C.) had 16 points, seven assists and two steals in the victory. Worley and Flippo each contributed with 10 points a piece. Flippo and Whitaker led Brevard with six rebounds each. Mendenhall led all-scorers in the game with 22 points for the Eagles. Freshman forward, Shannon Depew, added 15 points of her own for Carson-Newman, as well as, eight rebounds. 

Carson-Newman returns to action at Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
