Newberry Edges C-N, 5-4

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - The Newberry College men's tennis team won four points in singles to edge the Carson-Newman Eagles Saturday afternoon in Jefferson City, 5-4.
With the win, Newberry moves to 4-6 overall and 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference play, while the Eagles fall to 3-6 overall and 3-3 in league play.
The Eagles jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, winning at both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Sophomores Adriano Kira and Trent Slagle (Knoxville, Tenn.) won convincingly at No. 3 over Newberry's Mark Boswell (Piedmont, S.C.) and Pavle Popovic (Belgrade, Serbia), 8-3.
C-N's Rodolfo Schwarz (Sagrada Familia, Brazil) rolled through Boswell at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, but Slagle, at No. 3 singles, would be C-N's only other winner.
Newberry's Lucas Mattos (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) won a second-set tiebreaker against C-N's Jack Harvie (Snellville, Ga.) to clinch the match.
The Eagles return to action on Sunday at 10 a.m. against North Georgia in Jefferson City. Newberry returns to action on April 9 at Erskine College in Due West, S.C.
