Dal Shealy is in his first year at Carson-Newman as associate
athletic director for fundraising.
Shealy’s responsibilities include working to secure major
gifts in support of C-N’s 16 sports programs, with particular
focus on scholarship and capital needs for existing projects.
Shealy is no stranger to Mossy Creek. A 1960 graduate of C-N,
Shealy was head coach of the Eagles football team from 1970-73, and
was named NAIA Coach of the Year in 1971 and 1972. He was inducted
into the Carson-Newman Hall of Fame in 1986.
Prior to coaching at C-N, Shealy served as assistant head coach
and offensive coordinator on coaching staffs at Baylor, Tennessee
and Auburn.
Shealy also had stints as head coach at Richmond and Mars Hill.
During his time at Richmond, Shealy was named College Coach of the
Year in the state of Virginia three times and was the AFCA’s
Kodak Region Five Coach of the Year in 1984.
Following his coaching career, Shealy became the executive vice
president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in 1989 and was
named president in 1992. Shealy is credited with increasing
FCA’s number of campers by 197 percent, its campus groups by
107 percent and adult chapters by 76 percent. He also helped FCA
reduce its combined debt of some $4.6 million to zero. He retired
from the presidency in 2005.
A native of South Carolina, Shealy earned a Master of Arts degree
from George Peabody College at Vanderbilt. He has written several
books including, “One Way To Play: Drug-Free!” and
“One Way To Play: A Game Plan for Coaches.”
Shealy and his wife, Barbara, have three grown children and 11
grandchildren.
